How the Personalized Learning Surveys Can Help Transform Classrooms

We are rolling out some changes this year that will make our surveys more powerful, more aligned, and more responsive to the needs of teachers and students in the classroom.

As always, the Survey reports help educators figure out where they are with personalized learning by both diving into the details and placing those details in context. The updated questions are rooted in what we know is important for students to experience personalized learning.

Our reports will allow educators to zoom in and zoom out in key ways: 

ZOOM IN: A Full Picture of Classroom Learning Experiences

Compare how teachers are enabling personalized learning with how students are experiencing learning in the classroom. This provides a valuable reality check to ensure these practices are landing as intended.
To gain insight on Learner Led practices, the Teacher Survey explores ways by which teachers enable students to drive their learning.

ZOOM OUT: Examine how results compare

Details are only as good as the perspective you use to make sense of them. Our survey reports place findings in broader context, showing how responses compare against similar schools and districts in the region, as well as nationwide. This data is aggregated to protect the individual privacy of all respondents.

Educators can use surveys this year to track their personalized learning practices against the practices of their peers by taking a deeper dive into the responses on individual items. For example, you’ll learn how responses from your classroom or school compare nationwide—i.e., what percentage of students or teachers answered a question in a specific way. 

In the first year of this updated survey, the reports will not include:

  • Historic data comparing your results year over year
  • An overall numeric “score”
  • A banded level of personalized learning (previously labeled as emerging, moderate or high) in which your school or classroom falls

In future years, however, the reports will include scores, bands and historic comparisons that allow you to answer this key question: “How personalized is my classroom?” 

Measuring the Learning Experience

The LEAP Learning Framework, which guides our work on the ground, is the foundation of our Personalized Learning Surveys. The Framework stratifies the learner-centered approach into its core components and the majority of Survey items map to one of these components. You don’t need any familiarity with the Framework to take the Surveys, but using it to structure our analysis lets us give portraits of learning environments that are robust, multidimensional and organized. The Framework offers more than 100 strategies for bringing each component to life, and once educators have their results, they can reference the Framework for new ideas and solutions.
